The City of Palatka has a rich and long history, dating back before the Civil War. Located along the beautiful St. Johns River, the City served as the destination spot for northern visitors at the turn of the century during the Steamboat Era. At one time, Palatka boasted of several large hotels and many wealthy winter visitors, such as Henry Flagler and the Mellon family (of Mellon Bank, Philadelphia.)
Our prominent residents have included such notables as Billy Graham (who was baptized and ordained right here in Peniel Baptist Church), Mary Bethune Cookman, Babe Ruth, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell.
The past affluence of the City is evident in the many large homes that abound in the riverfront neighborhoods. Aggressive efforts by local groups, including the Southside Historic Neighborhood Association, continue the process of revitalization for Palatka's historic districts.
Over the past year, several more neglected historic homes have been purchased and are currently under restoration in our two residential historic districts.
We cordially invite you to come visit with us next time you are down this way.
In the meantime, please enjoy our "picture book" tour through our Southside Historic Neighborhood, which, as you might guess, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
