The Rile's House

The Rile's House

c. 1923
628 Emmett Street

The house was built in 1923 by Lillie G. Rowton but was not lived in until purchased by N. O. and Martha A. Riles in 1925. The fence that surrounds the property was taken from a design published in a 1924 Arts and Crafts magazine, in keeping with the style of the house.

The garden, where refreshments will be served, was designed for low maintenance. The first section you enter is the work area and vegetable gardens. Please note the raised vegetable beds that allow easy access for cultivating and harvest. Though a small area, it is large enough to provide fresh produce for the family, except during the hottest months of August and early September. The next area is the “quiet garden”...a small fishpond, shrubs and flowers make this garden a tranquil retreat. The front gardens were designed to be enjoyed from the house and porch, rather than from the street.

The current owners are Frederick and Nancy Henderschott. Fred is a landscape artist, and Nancy sits on our Historic Preservation Board. They are both dedicated preservationists and restorationists
